Finding a PG near Christ University sounds like a simple search. It is not, and the reason catches out a lot of first-year families: Christ is not one campus.

Step one: work out which campus you are actually going to

CHRIST (Deemed to be University) runs several campuses around Bengaluru, and the three that matter for accommodation are:

  • Central Campus, Hosur Road, Bhavani Nagar — the original campus. Students call it both "main" and "central"; they are the same place. The residential lanes behind it are SG Palya.
  • Bannerghatta Road Campus, Hulimavu — management, law and several postgraduate schools. Accommodation clusters in Hulimavu and along Bannerghatta Road.
  • Kengeri Campus, Kanmanike, Kumbalgodu, on Mysore Road — engineering, architecture, psychology. This one is genuinely out of town; see PG in Kumbalgodu.

These campuses are 15 to 30 km apart in a city where 15 km can mean 70 minutes. Booking near the wrong one is the single most expensive mistake in this process, and it is not reversible once the deposit is paid.

Step two: decide how far you are willing to walk, every day, for two years

Every listing will say "near Christ University". Almost none will tell you the distance in metres. Ask for it, and ask specifically which gate.

For the Central Campus, the gate most students actually use is the back gate on SG Palya Main Road, past Srinivasa Theatre. A PG that is 200 m from the front gate on Hosur Road may be 1.5 km from the back gate by the walkable route. That difference is 8 a.m. on a Monday in July, in the rain, for four semesters.

Our own honest numbers: Pelagia Palace is roughly 160 m from the back gate, and Paradise and Grande are a three-to-five minute walk. We publish these because they are checkable on a map.

Step three: understand what the rent actually covers

This is where advertised prices stop being comparable. Before you compare two numbers, get all of the following in writing:

  • Are all three meals included, or is there a separate mess bill?
  • Is electricity metered separately, particularly for AC rooms?
  • How much is the deposit, and what exactly is deducted from it at exit?
  • Is laundry included, or per item?
  • Is WiFi included and what is the actual speed at 10 p.m., not at 11 a.m.?
  • What is the notice period if you leave mid-term?

Step four: visit, and check these six things

  1. The kitchen. Ask to see it. If they hesitate, that is your answer. You will eat there roughly 700 times a year.
  2. The bathroom at 8 a.m. Water pressure and hot water availability during the morning rush is the thing everyone complains about later and nobody checks first.
  3. The actual room, not a display room. Ask to see one currently occupied at your sharing type.
  4. Who is on site at night. A resident warden is not the same as a phone number.
  5. Power backup. Does it cover fans and lights only, or the WiFi router too?
  6. Current residents. Ask two of them how the food is. They will tell you the truth.

Step five: book earlier than feels necessary

Demand near Christ is seasonal and sharp. May through July is when walkable rooms disappear, and the ones nearest the gate go first. If you have your offer letter, start looking that week.
